What’s the Deal with Tarot?

A few folks have asked me recently, “Ok Sadie, what is the deal with tarot?” Seems like they are asking, “I thought you were a yoga teacher. Have you switched to wearing a turban and predicting the future?” My answer is: A turban would not make my hair look good but let me explain why I’m so into tarot.

Since my mom gave me my first deck at 15 years old, tarot has been a part of my life. I read cards in my college dorm room and with my girlfriends in my first apartment. I would draw a card, find the meaning in the guidebook, and apply the meaning. It was a fun way to add a bit of woo-woo spice to my life.

Around 2018, I deepened my tarot studies and ventured beyond the guidebook interpretations. During that time, I was realizing that the life that I had built wasn’t what I wanted anymore. I craved change but I couldn’t see beyond my comforts and security. I needed to radically reimagine all of the basic elements of my life: my home, my career, my relationships, and my daily life. A consistent tarot practice helped me visualize my path—one step at a time.

Moving across the county and restarting my career (during a pandemic and other daily geopolitical upheavals) meant facing massive waves of uncertainty. It’s been exhausting, terrifying, and thrilling. To navigate these changes and deal with my regular freak-outs, I had to trust my gut more than ever.

Like a regular workout, tarot exercises my intuition and reminds me to trust myself. With gorgeous imagery, the cards map what Joseph Campbell referred to as “The Hero’s Journey”—the archetypical adventure into the unknown, overcoming adversity, and returning home transformed. Sounds like a familiar, glorious movie plot, right? But crafting a vision and building your dream life ain’t easy. Often I felt like I was not doing enough, looking ridiculous, and falling behind. Actually, I still feel like that. All. The.Time. And when I get pulled into not-enoughness, the cards help me to refocus on the next step.

If you are navigating changes in your own life, curious about learning tarot, and are ready to flex your intuitive muscles, let’s do a reading. When asking all the big “WTF?!” questions, it helps to check in with someone you can trust. Most importantly, it's about remembering to trust yourself. I can’t tell your fortune but I can help you find the vision and strength to build your future.
